Hyundai Heavy develops LCD transport robot
Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. has developed an industrial robot for the transportation of LCD panels between their production processes, the company said yesterday.
Hyundai Heavy will supply the robots to LG Display Co., the world's second-largest maker of liquid crystal display panels, which are widely used in TVs and computer monitors.
About 100 units will be deployed at the 8th-generation production line in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. LG Display plans to start operation of the plant in the first half of next year.
It is the first time that Hyundai Heavy developed an LCD transport robot, a Hyundai spokesperson said. Industrial robotics are used for transportation of LCD glass substrate between processes. LCD glass substrates must be moved in a highly-controlled - stable, smooth but speedy - manner, the company said. Japan is the main supplier of the robots.

Hyundai Heavy, the world's No. 1 shipmaker, has been producing industrial robots since 1984. It holds a 40 percent share of the market in the Korean automobile industry, where industrial robots are used for assembly. It has a 7 percent share of the global automobile manufacturing robotics market.

The global market for LCD transport robots - estimated to be worth $480 million and 6,400 units at present - is projected to grow about 15 percent annually to reach $540 million and 7,300 units by 2010.
"The Korean market is expected to grow to $100 million and 1,200 units this year and to $110 million and 1,300 units in 2009," a Hyundai official said. "We will target overseas markets, not to mention replacing shipped-in products with ours in Korea."

This is a R&D which we've learned. Sometimes, We have to accept any risks. I think this is the time to accept for Hyundai Heavy Instructure Co. They estimate future market and willing to change market share of Korea and world. I expect Hyundai after R&D.
